Laid down in 1936, launched in 1938 and finally commissioned in 1940, she sailed with the DKM Bismarck and participated in the sinking of the HMS Hood. Fondly remembered as "the lucky ship" she was the only heavy surface unit of the Kriegsmarine to survive the war. Surrendered to the British and then turned over to the US in 1945 she was transferred to Boston and eventually on to Bikini where she unwillingly participated in atomic bomb testing in the summer of 1946. Having survived two tests the ship was again transferred to Kwajalein atoll where she finally succumbed to the stress of her life and today rest on Enubuh as can be seen in the las two photos.
